The Lost Art of Classic AC Engineering
Taking a 40-year-old classic car to a modern dealership or a neighborhood garage is incredibly risky. Today's mechanics are trained to replace modular parts based on computer codes. They do not know how to fabricate custom mounting brackets, they do not understand obsolete refrigerant pressures, and they often break delicate, irreplaceable dashboard panels.
At Daga Autolek, our legacy dates back to 1950. Our senior technicians understand analog automotive engineering. We provide "white-glove" AC restoration services tailored specifically to the unique constraints of vintage automobiles, classic European sedans, and heritage Indian vehicles.
โ ๏ธ The R12 to R134a Conversion Problem
Vehicles manufactured before 1994 utilized R12 (Freon) gas. This gas is now globally banned and illegal to manufacture. If your classic car still has an R12 system, you cannot simply pump modern R134a gas into it. The old mineral oil used in R12 systems will violently react with R134a, turning into a thick sludge that instantly destroys the compressor.
Our Solution: We perform comprehensive, chemically safe R12 to R134a retrofits. We chemically flush all ancient mineral oil, replace every rubber O-ring with R134a-compatible Neoprene, install a modern expansion valve, and fit high-efficiency Sanden compressors.
Vehicles We Expertly Restore
Whether you are preparing for the Statesman Vintage Car Rally or simply want to comfortably drive your heritage vehicle in Kolkata's summer, we offer bespoke AC solutions for:
The Heritage Indian Classics
Cars like the Hindustan Ambassador, Premier Padmini (Fiat 1100), and Hindustan Contessa often suffer from vastly underpowered factory AC systems (if they had them at all) or overheating engines when the AC is engaged.
- Custom fabrication of heavy-duty compressor brackets.
- Upgrading ancient radiator fans to high-speed electric fans to prevent engine overheating in traffic.
- Installing sleek, under-dash "Superking" style blower units that don't ruin the classic aesthetic.
Classic Mercedes, BMW & European
The golden era of German engineering (the Mercedes W123, W124, W126, and BMW E30) featured incredibly complex, vacuum-actuated climate control systems. Most mechanics completely bypass these systems because they don't understand them.
- Repairing and sealing leaky vacuum pods behind the wooden dashboard.
- Converting obsolete, massive axial compressors to modern, low-drag rotary Sanden 508 compressors to improve fuel efficiency and engine pickup.
- White-glove handling of 40-year-old burr walnut wood trim and brittle plastic louvers.
Vintage Jeeps & Off-Roaders
For collectors of Willys Jeeps, early Mahindra MM540s, and classic Maruti Gypsys, installing a functioning AC inside a metal cabin is a massive engineering challenge.
- Designing compact, high-output cooling coils that fit tightly under cramped metal dashboards.
- Reinforcing the electrical system and installing high-output alternators to support the AC load.
